Small blue kingfisher

Birds

About

It is a very special and vividly colored bird species found mainly on the island of Java, as well as in regions such as Sumatra and Bali, Indonesia. Its plumage shimmers in sky-blue or metallic blue tones. One of its most distinctive features, which sets it apart from many other kingfishers, is its pure white belly rather than the typical orange underparts. It inhabits streams, rivers, canals, mangrove wetlands, and especially flooded rice paddies across Java. It quietly waits on branches or poles near the water’s edge. When hunting, it swiftly dives into the water to catch small fish and tiny aquatic crustaceans.
